Download Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint File Formats for Windows to open, edit, and save files using the new file formats in 2007 versions of Word, Excel,. Before upgrading Windows, verify that all existing applications are compatible and research upgrade issues. This is especially true if you don't have the installation disks because an application came pre-installed or a Trial version was activated. If installing a new version of Office, uninstall the current version first. If installing Office on a computer for the first time, uninstall any. Auto clicker with random delay.
Just bought a new Apple Macbook Air. I've always used Pages on prior Macs but this time around I've decided to switch to Open Office for all my work. This leaves me with a slight problem.
I have on the new Mac many files that I made with pages. They all carry the .pages extension of course.
Open Office won't open them using the .pages extension and I really don't want to have to change each file to Microsoft Office if I can avoid doing that. (Many files involved)
Is there any way at all that I can solve this using Apple's software and Open Office?????
Many thanks;
Dudley Henriques
If it helps others, my solution was to try everything suggested. It is notable that I do NOT have Pages installed on the Mac during the period involving this issue. The .pages issue had to be handled without Pages on the system.
The result (for me personally in my situation) was to gather the .pages files that needed to be dealt with and put them in a dedicated folder on the desktop. Those that were NOT requiring future editing were changed to a PDF format through the print dialog drop down and refiled. Those needing editing down the line were simply (restructured) as a new file in OO by copying the text into a new document and simply inserting imaging where required. These files are now stored as OO files and can be converted to any available extension required at the time they need to be emailed.
I deeply appreciate your help as a group and look forward to future dialog with you as situations require.

A pages file extension is used for default document format of Pages, a word processor and page layout program from Apple. No other program can open the *.pages files, but Pages is able to export its documents to some other formats, such as PDF or Microsoft Word's *.docx.

The pages file extension is mainly used for the proprietary document format of Apple Pages.
Apple Pages is a word processor and page layout application developed by Apple and was a part of the iWork productivity suite. Currently it is available as a free standalone application on App store for all Mac users. Also is available as on-line service and app for iOS operating system (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch).
Apple Pages is also available for iPhone/iPad and on-line on Apple iCloud service. On Windows platform, there is no software compatible with this document file format.
The PAGES file format is XML based and may contain basic text documents or elaborated multi-page brochures, including images, special texts, tables, graphs, charts and more.
These *.pages files can be created from a blank page or based on saved template. Apple Pages include over 140 pre-designed templates.
Technically, a pages file is actually aZIP archive that contains several files, namely:
- buildVersionHistory.plist - a small text file that contains version history data
- index.xml - contains the main document data in XML format
- Preview.pdf - located in QuickLook folder, used for preview purposes
- Thumbnail.jpg - also located in QuickLook folder, its a low res image for preview purposes

Only Apple Pages can open *.pages files and there is currently no other word processor for Windows or other platfroms that could open PAGES documents.
How to convert:
If you want to send *.pages files to your friend, who doesn't have Apple Pages installed, you have to save them in some other format (PDF, DOC, DOCX), so he can view them in some alternative office suite.
Apple iWork Pages supports export (conversion) of .pages documents to other formats such as DOCX, TXT or PDF.
You can access this function via File → Export and export the .pages file to another document format.
